The Wilson Shaft Gallery is a project founded in 1998 when the former mining ruins of various shafts, baths and pithead buildings were renovated at huge expense and effort and passed on to the local community for new and changed purposes. This unique building, designed by the Zillmann brothers, is young again thanks to the centre’s gallery, museum and theatrical performances. All the artistic events held here are, in a way, a continuation of the remarkably strong tradition of the Grupa Janowska which was created here and painted in the Wieczorek mine. The gallery’s exhibition rooms are also used for the organization of various exhibition events, entertainments, concerts and conferences.
The project’s founders’ main goal is to promote young, brave painters, graphic artists, photographers and performers. Avant-garde and unconventional art finds shelter here, with the centre’s focus on acquainting the local community with the brave, involved and socially pacifistic, which is supposed to oppose everything that takes freedom away from man. From its very foundation, the project wished for art to leave exclusive salons and galleries and stay true to reality.
